Should you buy one?

The Porsche Panamera should be on the top of your shopping list if you’re looking for a luxury car that drives like a sports car. It really does handle as you’d expect a Porsche should, with responsive steering for agile cornering. Although both the Audi A8 and Mercedes-Benz S-Class have excellent air-suspension set-ups that combine a comfortable ride and sharp cornering, but the Porsche is leagues ahead for pure driver appeal.

It’s not perfect though. The interior controls and switchgear are hard to navigate and take a while to master, while the 4.0-litre models are heavy and lack the handling agility of the 3.0 litre. Options are also very expensive and will soon turn this expensive car into a very expensive one if you start ticking those boxes on the configurator.

The good news is that the entry-level 3.0-litre V6 version drives so well, you won’t need to opt for a GTS or Turbo version to feel like you’re getting the full experience. The V8 versions are extremely fast and add all the performance you’d ever want, but are probably too much for the UK’s congested roads.

Star of the range is the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, which works very well – it’s quick and snarly when you want it to be, but runs an easy 30 miles on electric onlu if you’re driving in town. Fuelling costs are competitive, as our easy 30mpg on an extended test proves. However, if your lifestyle works for one and you don’t need to cover big miles on a daily basis, we’d recomment a Porsche Taycan instead.
