Overview

In a world crammed with in-demand SUVs and dazzling electric cars, it’s good to know that Audi continues to bring us its solid estate car, the A4 Avant. Honed to perfection over several generations, it’s a go-to load lugger favoured by those who need a no-nonsense, long-distance cruiser packed with the latest tech.

This A4 Avant has been around since 2015, but was updated in 2019 in order to keep things fresh – which is no bad thing, as the strength of the opposition here is astounding. Not only is it fighting the premium establishment in the form of the BMW 3 Series Touring and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate but also it’s up against high-spec versions of the Peugeot 508 SW and Volkswagen Arteon Shooting Brake. So, Audi’s old stager needs to be good.

Like the A4 saloon, the Avant comes with a choice of several engine options – be it petrol or diesel. For the petrol range there’s a selection of four-cylinder turbo units ranging in power from 150hp to 245hp, while diesels span 163hp to 347hp for the S4 TDI.

The line-up consists of Technik, Sport, S Line and Black Edition as part of the regular range, while the S4 TDI and RS4 top the line-up as standalone performance-focused models. The Audi RS4 Avant is the halo car of the range, punching out 450hp from its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6. Rivals for that are few and far between – but check out the BMW M3 Touring and Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate.
