The first glimpse of the Audi R8’s now instantly recognisable form was at the 2003 Frankfurt Motorshow, with the Le Mans Quattro.

This concept car was built to celebrate three successive wins at the French endurance race and went on to become the inspiration for the production model, which was named after Audi’s race car.

Early R8s didn’t come with the concept car’s V10 but instead used a 4.2-litre V8 that had seen service in the RS4, but used a dry sump for a lower centre of gravity.

In 2009 the mighty V10 version was released, using a 5.2-litre unit based on the Lamborghini Gallardo engine, and featured  a new set of LED headlights for the first time
