Parkers Awards 2020 - Small Van of the Year Winner

Best Small Van Award in partnership with… MCN

Small vans combine affordability, versatility and have a usefully small footprint that makes them easy to drive for anyone who jumps in. Our 2020 award winners are also exceptionally car-like, with lots of available technology. But don't think that means they make poor working vehicles – these tough little vans have huge payload capacity, too.

CITROEN BERLINGO / PEUGEOT PARTNER /
VAUXHALL COMBO CARGO

The newest small vans on the market, this trio of closely related cousins bring innovation and practicality galore, and are deserving winners of the 2020 Parkers Small Van Award. Not only do they offer exceptional payload capacity, capable of hauling over 1.0 tonne in some cases, they also feature modern technology solutions to long-standing problems – including the option of a camera system that allows you to always see what’s happening on the road behind despite having unglazed rear doors. A spacious cab, good ride quality and a wide range of options means they should be easy vans to live with, too. Whatever you need a small van for, there’s almost certainly a version of these to suit you.

FORD TRANSIT CONNECT

The Transit Connect is everything good about Ford vans distilled into a compact package, and a very deserving runner up in the Small Van Award category. The latest engines are efficient and smooth, and equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard – a rare luxury in this class – with an eight-speed auto available as an option. Ride comfort is good, but it’s the driving experience that really impresses, with sharp handling and excellent body control in the corners. Some clever thinking in the load area makes this more practical than it first appears, too, and Ford now offers a strong selection of connectivity features and modern infotainment options.

VOLKSWAGEN CADDY

If there’s such a thing as a style icon in the small van class, it’s our Small Van Award runner-up, the VW Caddy. Even so, this van is far more than just a pretty face. Resisting the downsizing trend, all of its diesel engines are 2.0 litres in capacity – bigger than anything any rival offers, and delivering performance that always feels more muscular than the raw figures suggest. Petrol power is also available, while a choice of two body sizes and plenty of creature comforts from Volkswagen’s car range mean there’s lots of choice for prospective buyers here. Strong used values help keep overall running costs down, as well.
