The Ford Fiesta has overtaken the Vauxhall Corsa to become the UK's best selling used car of 2010.

Figures from Experian, the global information service, showed that 285,962 used Fiestas were sold last year, compared to the 278,169 used Corsas that found new owners.

Although overall sales for the Fiesta were lower than in 2009, a more pronounced drop in sales of Vauxhall's Corsa left the Fiesta in first place.

The only other change in the top ten was the Renault Clio, which moved ahead of the Ford Mondeo to take seventh place.

The statistics demonstrated that affordable, fuel-efficient, smaller vehicles continue to be the most appealing to used car buyers.

Experian's data also shows that the Mazda MX-5 outsold the Audi TT in 2010, while Toyota's Prius was the best selling hybrid, holding over 55% of the sales for that sector.
