A slightly facelifted but hugely more economical Mercedes-Benz CL will go on sale in the UK this September.

The luxury four-seat coupe gains new bumpers and bonnet, redesigned front and rear lights (with the addition of daytime running lights) and a revised steering wheel design and new interior trim materials.

But under the bonnet much bigger changes have taken place.

The CL500 model is now badged BlueEfficiency thanks to a package of measures, such as a new direct injection system and stop/start technology, which have made the V8 petrol unit 23% more economical than the unit it replaces.

The twin-turbo V8 engine produces 435bhp (up from 388bhp), but fuel economy rises from 23 to nearly 30mpg. CO2 emissions are cut from 288 to 224g/km, dropping the CL500 by two benefit-in-kind tax bands to 33%.

Prices for the new CL will be announced closer to its September launch, but expect a CL500 to cost around £90,000.
