Peugeot's ageing 407 range will be replaced next year by a production version of the striking 5 by Peugeot concept which is being revealed at the Geneva Motor Show.

Likely to be badged 508, the name shows that Peugeot is moving the 407 range up in terms of its positioning - it will be marketed more as a crossover between the traditional family and executive models.

Further details won't be revealed until next year, but Peugeot has said that the production car will use the Hybrid4 technology which is due to go into the 3008 model later this year.

The Hybrid4 technology uses a 2.0-litre HDi diesel engine offering 163bhp allied to an electric motor which drives the rear wheels. Delivering 200bhp, the car is said to emit just 99g/km of CO2 and return economy of 74mpg.

It will also be able to operate solely by electric power at low speeds, meaning zero emissions.
