In a recent survey by GEM Motoring Assist, tailgating was highlighted at the most dangerous situation when driving on UK motorways. However, this got us thinking – why do people tailgate?

We think there could be several reasons. Firstly, people may tailgate in congestion caused by other drivers not moving over and letting people by. It’s a common problem, often known as lane-hogging or middle-lane driving.

Another reason could be drivers not exercising due care whilst driving, for instance being on their mobile phone or eating.

It’s common to hear people complain about driving standards in the UK, but which aspect do you think needs most improvement? Vote in our poll below and let us know, and don’t forget to leave a comment and tell us exactly how driving standards could be improved.
