Running costs

3.5 out of 5 3.5
  • Diesels the most frugal of the lot
  • EcoBoost petrols economical around town
  • Economy takes a hit out of it

If you want the most economical EcoSport, you’ll want one of the diesels. With the 125hp EcoBlue diesel coming later (with figures TBC), it’s the 100hp 1.5-litre TDCi that’s the most frugal of the lot, returning up to 68.9mpg on the combined cycle.

The petrols aren’t far behind for claimed fuel economy, though. Both manual versions of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engines (125 and 140hp) return 54.3mpg, while the 125hp EcoBoost automatic returns 46.7mpg.

Estimated fuel cost per year

Fuel type Pence per litre Estimated cost per year *
Unleaded 128p £1,098 - £1,322 *
Diesel 131p £876 - £1,103 *

* The estimated fuel cost figure is based on an annual mileage of 10,000 miles and is a guide to how much this model will cost in fuel each year. It's calculated using the model's average MPG (calculated from both town centre and motorway driving) and the average fuel price from around the country. Actual fuel costs will vary based on driving style and road conditions.

Vehicle excise duty (VED) varies according to the CO2 emissions and the fuel type of the vehicle. For cars registered before 01 March 2001 it is based on engine size. For cars registered on or after 01 March 2001 the VED or road tax is based on the car's CO2 emissions.

Green credentials

Again, it’s the diesel with the most favourable CO2 emissions – the 1.5-litre TDCi emitting 107g/km.

Go for the EcoBoost petrols with a manual gearbox and emissions increase slightly to 119g/km, applicable to both the 125 and 140hp engines.

The 125hp auto is dirtier, though, producing 134g/km of CO2.

Highest and lowest CO2 emissions

Engine CO2 emissions Road tax (12 months)
1.0 EcoBoost (100ps) Diesel,
1.5 TDCi (100ps) Diesel
107 g/km (Min) £140
1.5 Petrol 149 g/km (Max) £155

Reliability

4 out of 5 4.0
  • EcoSport now built at a new facility in Europe
  • Shouldn’t be too much cause for concern
  • Feels higher quality since it was updated

There shouldn’t be much to worry you about Ford EcoSport reliability. The firm has a decent record of building resilient cars and all of the engines and gearboxes have been tried and tested in other models.

The facelifted car introduced late in 2017 is produced at an all-new plant in Romania, while the previous example was built in India.

The car feels higher quality inside, too, which bodes well for standing the test of time, especially if it’s in the hands of young families.
