Ford Mondeo: Fuel economy

700 miles on a tank?

Fuel economy has been edging upwards as the Mondeo has piled on the miles, and is now regularly above 43mpg, according to the trip computer, although I’ve yet to make my own calculation based on actual fuel use.

I reckon it should be possible to stretch a tank of diesel to 700 miles with a degree of determination.

A 70-litre fuel tank is large for a car in this class, and the official combined fuel consumption figure of 45.6mpg equates to about 6.2 litres per 100km (or 62 miles).

This results in the easy calculation of 10 litres per 100 miles, so, if I can stretch a tank of diesel farther than 700 miles, I know I’ve bettered the official fuel consumption figure.

I’m doing about two or three long journeys in the car each month, so with some concentration, it should only be a matter of time.

Current mileage: 5991
