It is perhaps the most iconic name in the automotive world, and the Porsche 911 has a very long history and a very unusual construction to point to. In fact, it remains one of the oldest nameplates still in production today.

The very first Porsche 911 was launched in 1963 and was a two plus two sports car – essential suitable for two adults up front and two occasional passengers in the rear.

It is a two-door sports coupe but unlike conventional car the engine is mounted in the rear while the boot is in the front. Porsche also built and uses to this day an engine known as a ‘Boxer’ engine where the six cylinders lie flat on their side but on equal, opposing sides. Conventional engines tend to use four cylinders in a row and all upright.
