For every trend, there’s a counter-culture, and in company car parks the unassuming saloon could be the ultimate rebellion in a sea of jacked-up SUVs and niche-filling crossovers.
Mazda is backing those rebels in true style; lithe and low, the Mazda 6 is available in saloon and estate forms from £23,195.
Mazda 6 – Petrol power, improved economy
Topping the range, Mazda’s Skyactiv-G 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol produces 194hp, giving the GT Sport model a 0-62mph time of 8.1 seconds, with emissions of 153g/km. Cylinder deactivation ensures reasonable cruising economy for the size of engine, too, giving a combined economy of 42mpg.
Those figures might not look impressive for anyone comparing the last generation of turbodiesels, but for a non-turbocharged petrol model, they’re quite remarkable. As the 2.5-litre engine is naturally aspirated – unlike so many modern petrol engines that use a response-sapping turbocharger to improve efficiency – combined economy should be relatively easy to obtain in real-world driving.
Torn between petrol or diesel for your next company car?
The figures for company car drivers speak volumes – rather than a clear advantage for diesel, the refinement and lower NOx emissions of petrol are now marginally cheaper for company car drivers with the Mazda 6.
Figures for the Mazda 6 Tourer are similar, though P11D values are a little higher for the Estate model.
