Is the Peugeot e-208 any good?

An all-electric version of an already excellent hatchback can’t really be a bad thing, can it? The Peugeot e-208 is the electrified version of the 208 – as its name might suggest. And, so far at least, it doesn’t have many rivals at all, with electric superminis being a rare breed.

The main two cars the e-208 needs to compete with are the Renault Zoe – a Parkers award-winner – and its own sister car, the mechanically-identical Vauxhall Corsa-e.  However EVs aren’t always purchased on size, so it also needs the chops to compete with everything from the fashionable Honda e to the excellent Volkswagen ID.3.

Though the e-208 is far from perfect, we think it does a pretty good job at this.

What’s it like inside?

Peugeot’s interiors are full of drama and the e-208 is no exception. With clever 3D instruments (they’re less distracting than they sound), a widescreen infotainment display and loads of chrome, piano black and other interesting materials, it’s a great place to sit. It feels high-quality, too.

The driving position may not suit everybody, as Peugeot’s i-Cockpit setup positions the wheel low and the dials high – some drivers report they can’t see the instruments because of it.

It’s also not especially roomy in here, with a good-sized boot but rather tight rear seats with small rear doors for access.

What’s it like to drive?

Like all electric cars, the e-208 is smooth and relatively silent, with the instant torque of its electric motor making it peppy to drive around town and more than quick enough to surprise a few people away from the lights.

Its electric motor is also powerful enough that faster roads aren’t a problem, and the little Peugeot doesn’t feel outclassed on the motorway.

You’ll find the e-208 as good to drive in terms of ride and handling as its petrol sibling, which makes it among the nicer cars to drive in the class. It can’t quite compete with the Ford Fiesta in terms of outright fun, but that small steering wheel is paired to quick, accurate steering and capable suspension.

What models and trims are available?

The e-208 is available with a single electric motor and battery combination – that’s a 136hp motor paired to a 50kWh battery.

In terms of trim levels, Peugeot offers the same range as it does with the petrol 208 as part of its ‘choose your Peugeot, choose your powertrain’ pledge. The base Active Premium model is still reasonably well equipped with alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, rear parking sensors and air-conditioning, but you can step all the way up to GT Premium which has big-car features such as keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, connected navigation, full LED headlights and up to 4 USB sockets for charging.
