Renault has launched racy looking versions of the Clio that are priced lower than entry-level versions of the Ford Fiesta.

The Clio S models are based on the Expression equipment grade and are available only as five door models, but come in a range of bright colour schemes with white alloy wheels, and also have some sporty touches inside.

The S available either with the 75bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine, the 100bhp 1.2 TCe turbocharged petrol engine or 86bhp 1.5 dCi diesel.

Both petrol engines have CO2 emissions below 140g/km, while the diesel's emissions figure of 115g/km would place this version in the 13 per cent BIK tax bracket over the next few years - currently the lowest tax band for diesel cars.

It means drivers can choose versions of the Clio that share some of the excitement of the Renaultsport versions without the higher costs of those models.

Cosmetic changes compared with Expression versions include white front bumper inserts, white rear spoiler, optional racing stripes and rear privacy glass.

Interior changes include 'S' embossed upholstery, leather covered steering wheel and white centre console and dashboard inserts as well as white-faced instruments.

Prices for the Clio S start at £11,209 on the road for the 1.2-litre version rising to £13,458 on the road for the 1.5 dCi with air conditioning.
