Should you buy a used Volvo XC60 Mk1?

For families looking for a middle ground between an affordable used car, and the latest, safest medium-sized SUVs the original Volvo XC60 is almost perfect, and a a very sensible purchase if you’re looking at newer examples or want all-wheel drive. Be aware that despite Volvo’s relatively proactive stance on safety and environmental issues, the XC60 is one of those cars that ran out the clock on Euro 6 implementation so choosing a diesel for ULEZ or clean air zones means checking the specific car you’re looking at – though, admirably, Volvo did get the 4×4 models compliant where many manufacturers just dropped any pretence of off-road capability for their SUVs.

As a premium brand you may find your money goes further looking at a 2014-on Nissan Qashqai or X-Trail, and many of the XC60’s qualities can be found in the contemporary Ford Kuga with an acceptable shift towards more robust materials and a more mainstream image. 4×4 Kugas are rarer, but if 4×4 is your focus we’d also have a look at a BMW X3 or the XC60’s platform-mate, the Land Rover Freelander 2.

What we like

Elegant, well-proportioned styling, comfortable and supportive seats, capable all-wheel drive and torquey five-cylinder diesel, reassuring safety credentials for the age and budget.

What we don’t like

Lower-powered diesels work hard and can fail prematurely, automatic gearboxes do not take kindly to neglect and are expensive to repair, practicality is compromised for style compared with previous Volvo designs.
