FAQs

Frequently asked questions about the Audi A3

  • What is the Audi A3?
  • A mainstay of Audi’s compact family car range for almost 25 years, the A3 is a line-up of models that shares many mechanical components with its close cousins, the Volkswagen Golf, SEAT Leon and Skoda Octavia.

It takes on a variety of upmarket rivals such as the BMW 1 Series, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and the leftfield Lexus CT, as well as pricier versions of mainstream models, such as the Ford Focus Vignale.

Now in its fourth-generation, the latest A3 went on sale in 2020, introducing increased levels of technology and efficiency.
  • Which versions of the Audi A3 are available?
  • So far, Audi offers the Mk4 A3 in two bodystyles. There's a practical, five-door A3 Sportback plus a more elegant and traditional A3 Saloon, both available with a variety of engines and trim levels.

Previous generations have also been available as a three-door A3 Hatchback, but given this style has fallen out of fashion in recent years, it's unlikely there will be a new one.

Fans of open-air motoring can still indulge in an A3 Cabriolet, but remember this is based on the older Mk3 model, so you won't benefit from the very latest features and technology.

All of the fourth-generation A3's engines are turbocharged, with petrols being badged TFSI and diesels as TDI. Plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions will follow later, set to be called TFSI e, unlike previously when the E-Tron name was used. Audi now reserves that for fully electric cars.

Most A3s send their power to the front wheels, but Quattro models divert theirs to all four.
  • What are the Audi S3 and Audi RS 3?
  • Two tiers of go-faster versions have been available, but such is Audi’s long-standing naming strategy that neither was actually badged A3.

The Audi S3 packed a respectable 305hp four-cylinder turbocharged engine and was available in Hatchback, Sportback, Saloon and Cabriolet guises.

Above it was the top-of-the-range RS 3, developed by Audi Sport. Initially only available as a Sportback, later complemented by a Saloon version, early RS 3s featured a a 395hp turbocharged five-cylinder engine, with a warbling, popping soundtrack for good measure. Revisions were introduced during 2019 upping the performance ante of the engine to 400hp.

Replacements for these cars are due in late-2020 and mid-2021, respectively, with the RS 3 likely to become more efficient thanks to hybrid technology.
  • Is the Audi A3 good to drive?
  • Aside from the S3 and RS 3, the Audi A3 delivers a benign-yet-capable driving experience. It won’t get the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end, but it has commendable body control, traction – particularly in Quattro guise – and balance, allowing you to tackle most twisty roads at reasonable pace.

Sportier S Line specification cars come with slightly harder suspension, which can make the ride a tad jarring during ordinary driving. You can order a softer suspension set-up at no extra cost for better day-to-day manners.
  • Why should I buy an Audi A3?
  • Few other compact family cars come close to the feelgood factor you get inside an A3. The materials used inside are first rate, the on-board technology is useful and has a wow factor, but there's no escaping it's one of the pricier cars of this type.

On the plus side, resale values remain strong and you do feel like you're getting something very substantial for your money. Pick a mid-range model, don't go wild with the extra-cost options and you'll be driving a very desirable car.
