In their own words

Felt very luxurious and looked it too. Very comfortable seats, though oddly they wouldn't recline back very far, so you couldn't stop for a nap in it (I have done that once or twice in my previous golf cabby). It is low and racy, I didn't realise until I got home, and parked it next to my golf. It was several inches lower, which meant I always clambered out, and threw myself in, compared to entering/exiting gracefully in a dignified fashion. The head rests have the support at the side, which meant my sheepskin seat covers never sat properly, as designed to hook round the usual central arrangement. The seat belt exerted too much pressure on my shoulder, not a problem I encountered in my 1995 golf cabby, or my recent Mini cabby purchase. I found the 318 non turbo not as fast as my golf (it should be a second faster on paper, but wasn't). Overall though, it felt very well built and solid, and a very good quality car, so I would recommend it. I got a regular 38/39mpg per tankful.

How reliable do you find the car?

Had to have 3 new coil packs over the first few months. Had a nightmare time when a storm broke the drivers window one night while parked in the drive, and Saga's glass company don't know how to fit frameless windows, so misfitted one, broke another, misfitted again, then door pocket filled with water. 4 men later, one knew what he was doing. I changed insurance company on renewal. Luckily still had previous car, as it took nearly 6 weeks to get fixed. Not car's fault, but then the coil packs started going. (ran very rough, but would drive to the garage).

Does the car do everything you expected it to do?

My BMW only had 65,000 miles when I bought it, and the camel coloured leather interior was immaculate, and looked wonderful with the also immaculate aqua blue/green exterior. Probably the most beautiful car I've ever owned, a very copious boot with roof up, and still satisfactorily big with it down. Once I'd got the hang of cruise control I used it in every average speed check area, and it's very relaxing not to be constantly checking you're still doing 40 on a motorway past the roadworks!
