What does this car say about you?

Couldn't afford the XC90 that we really wanted.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

I never had any overtly negative comments but I did overhear two friends saying that it was nothing more than a Daewoo. Sad thing is, they were right.

Would you buy this car again and why?

No I certainly wouldn't buy another Captiva again. It didn't do anything well but managed to do lots of things rather badly. A real disappointment and I was glad to see it go after the two year lease finished. The quality of the materials used, inside and out, was appalling and the practicalities of using the extra two seats in the boot meant it didn't serve as the 7 seater I needed as my kids absolutely hated using them. It's put me off Chevrolets all together.

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Didn't buy from a dealer

Did you buy this car new?

    Yes

    What price did you pay?

    £0

When did you buy the car?

    September 2008

Did you get a good deal and why?

I got a great deal at the time- it costs over £50 less pcm for the lease deal payments on this than on the PCP payments for my previous Espace. There have since been even better deals on other 7 seat SUV's but I'm reasonably happy with the deal I got at the time.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

I needed a seven seater to replace my Espace Mk4 and this one had the best lease deal at the time.

    What was the dealer like?

I went to the local (1 hour away!) dealer to test drive the car and to give them a chance to match or beat the lease deal I had been offered but they couldn't come close.

  • Driving it

    1 out of 5 1.0

    What's it like to drive?

It's a tall SUV so it's not going to handle especially great. I didn't have any problems with ride quality that official reviewers seem to mention. It's no worse than my previous Espace 4. I had a Freelander a few years ago and this is better to drive than that was but that's not exactly a commendation. The power from the engine was pathetic and the brakes required a leap of faith at the best of times. The steering is pretty lumpy but not unbearable and the gearchange is notchy.

    What's it like to park?

It's easy enough because of the reversing sensors. It's a bit tricky placing the front because you can't really see the bonnet extremities- could have done with sensors there too.

Have you had any problems with the car?

I never got the computer to give me decent readings of any sort. The compass was hopelessly lost & the mpg reading wildly inaccurate. I tried resetting several times to no avail and gave up in the end. Also, the chrome on the rear hatch details bubbled after a few months and looked awful. The DPF (filter) caused a major scare on the M1 by choosing to recharge while I was overtaking at 70mph, stalling the engine briefly and causing all the warning lights to come on. Nightmare.

What's most practical about your car?

7 seats. Lots of storage boxes and bins etc.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Reversing sensors are standard on LTX- they've come in handy already and we're looking forward to winter with the heated seats- those leather seats would be freezing in the mornings without it.
