Ford Escort Hatchback 1990

  • Economy

    Value

    2 out of 5 2.0

Value sinking faster than the Titanic. However, you can pick one up for as little as a grand, or as much as six+.

    Costs

    1 out of 5 1.0

Cost me an absolute fortune! Drinks fuel, parts are fairly expensive and some parts are a nightmare to get hold of. Insurance is a real stinger, especially when modified. Fifteen hundred fully comp for a 23yr old with a clean licence and 4 yrs no claims!

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Great handling, especially when a Koni adjustable suspension kit, strut brace, and quality tyres fitted. Have to go real slow over speed bumps though and the damn things are everywhere!

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Still quick enough to give a lot of things on the road a pasting! This car is 11 years old and in this day and age 150bhp from a 2 litre ain't much to boast about.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    1 out of 5 1.0

Awful, absolutely awful! There is always something that needs fixing, just look at all my problems!

    Image

    3 out of 5 3.0

At the end of the day it is only an Escort, but one of the better ones. Looks a bit too similar to an XR3i for my liking. Stick a few aftermarket parts on to stand out and draw some attention, but watch your insurance go even higher.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Recaro seats are very good. Ride is pretty bumpy, as you can expect with having it lowered. Apparently there aint much room in the back, but I don't sit in the back, so I don't care!

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

I bought mine with a Scorpion Cat 1 alarm/immobiliser already fitted so the security is very good. From what everyone else says, standard security is rubbish.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

I bought the car from a Ford dealer and the suspension was dangerous. Somebody had chopped the springs and left the shocks standard, so when braking hard the car started to fish-tail! Ford could not get me a rear hub! At least not in this country! POOR.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

New: alternator, battery, radiator, cat, middle section.

    Other

New: suspension kit, steering arms, suspension bushes. Got a rear hub from a scrap yard (took me a week to find one). The brakes are awful, even my drilled and grooved aftermarket discs have warped!

Did you buy the car new?

    Used

Would you buy the same model again?

    No

Did you buy from the same manufacturer again?

    No
