  • Economy

    Value

    3 out of 5 3.0

Imported from Ireland, my UK spec Pajero Sport cost £4K less than the equivalent Shogun Sport. Felt as though I got a lot of metal for my money, but was generally disappointed at equipment level.

    Costs

    1 out of 5 1.0

Crippling running costs mean I'm parting with this vehicle prematurely. It's thirsty and requires servicing every 6500miles. It's also hard to find reasonable insurance due to its imported status.

  • On the road

    Driving

    3 out of 5 3.0

Enjoyed commanding driving position, comfortable seating, precise gearshift and minimal body roll. Didn't enjoy unsettled ride over poor surfaces and felt cruising would have been improved by 6th gear.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

Gutless between 30 & 50mph, adequate torque for overtaking below 80mph. Towed Grand Cherokee as though it wasn't there. Thirsty, hi-revving diesel only returned 25mpg at best. Seemed unstoppable off-road.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Oil warning light alerted me to engine oil having 'evaporated' shortly after I acquired vehicle. Was promptly filled up and hasn't happened since. Nothing else has gone wrong.

    Image

    5 out of 5 5.0

Smart looking, imposing vehicle. Draws many admiring glances and frightens old ladies.

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Plenty of passenger and luggage space, though I missed not having a footrest next to clutch. Cabin could be a noisy place at times what with various rattles, squeaks and the roar from the engine.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Pathetic. Only an immobiliser fitted as standard - doors not even equipped with deadlocks I'm told. Had to have Thatcham approved alarm fitted as term of insurance. Another expense.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

Mitsubishi UK dealers seemed upset at my buying an Irish import. They took every opportunity to 'slag off' my vehicle, "Pajeros have no rust proofing - only Shoguns do, etc".
