  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

When compared to my previous car (98 S mondeo TD) its actually cheaper to run and maintain, had mine for 2 years now, paid £8,000 in sept 2002 with 75k on the clock and full BMW history - now has 126k on clock and hasn't given me any mega bills yet.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

So long as I stay away from BMW labour costs (£75 per hour +vat!!) I think its quite reasonable to run. A new clutch at 90,000 miles cost me £100 for the parts (from BMW) and £90 labour to fit it, loads of room under the bonnet, when compared to most cars.

  • On the road

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

Drives like no other car in its class, feels glued to the road, ultra responsive steering, slick gearshift, brakes are a bit naff even when in top order but all round great driving car.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Will hit 125mph fully loaded, cruises at the legal limit without effort, engine has a lovely tone to it, overtakes without thrashing the engine in low gears, once did a 300 mile trip and then back in same day.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Never once dumped me at the roadside and made me have to walk away from her. Bit heavy on front brake pads (about 12k a set) but otherwise fine, just service when the light comes on, never had to top up oil between services.

Still looks good for a car that was designed in the late 80's, mine is totally standard SE spec - don't see any point to modifying her, a wash & polish & she looks great. Bonnet & sides painted-stonechips & parking dents from jealous vectras & mondeos!

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

I find it okay but I sit behind the wheel! No complaints from passengers, well not about the car anyway!

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

Not been touched by the naughty lads - yet! Alarm has limited range - need to be next to car to operate - dealer fitted Sigma device.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

Only use main dealer when I have to - labour rates are expensive, pointless buying non original parts though, they don't last.

    Problems

Not a murmmer, takes all I can give it and keeps on running fine.

    Other

Needed bushes in rear arms at 95k, some interior trim worn.
