BMW 5-Series Saloon
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Holds if value slightly better due to rarity, but at end of day it's still an exec class car and you must expect some high bills if stuff goes wrong. Not a car to be fixed at the back street garage.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Only 4X4 mechanical parts plus suspension are a nightmare, as all must come from BMW Germany as no after market supplier makes them here. Petrol averages about 24mpg and insurance is high.

  • On the road

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

Great to drive. Better than the rear-wheel 525i SE in wet or ice/snow as you don't have to worry about rear end slipping out on twisty country roads. Also feels more confident at speed.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Still very quick for age, although petrol suffers.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

No major problems - just routine maintenance.

It's still a BMW, although getting tired of "you must be a drug dealer to run it".

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

Has every extra. Seats are great - supportive and firm and hold you in place. Great ride quality. Very quiet and quick. Still a great grand tourer.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

BMWs alarm/immobiliser is ok, but not the best. Have added group 1 alarm and latest group 2 immobiliser plus tracker - can't be too careful.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

I've had great help from BMW (Henry Bros, Glasgow) with any information or getting parts I need.

  • Problems and Ownership

None at all as long as oil and routine services are up to date.
