  • Summary

    5 out of 5 5.0

What does this car say about you?

That I like fast cars without lots of go faster stripes. It's not necessarily a 'sleeper' car or a Q car, but it is definitely not a look-at-me chav car like a Focus RS, Astra VXR, Impreza etc.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

They don't like it and think I should buy a sensible Korean or Japanese car that doesn't have the ability to excite.

Would you buy this car again and why?

No. I would buy something faster. You can't buy a car that is as fast or slower. It just doesn't work like that until your late 50s.

What are you likely to buy next?

A V8. Hopefully a Mercedes C63 AMG before that 6.2 engine is killed off and replaced with the 5.5.

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Independent

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £15,850

When did you buy the car?

    August 2012

Did you get a good deal and why?

Got a few hundred pounds off. There was an identical one for sale at the time but it was 250 miles away which wouldn't have been worth the additional travel. So I couldn't really get much off the car.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Wanted something that was fairly quick without getting into silly running costs.

    What was the dealer like?

Usual second-hand dealer. Reluctant to sort out some minor issues, wouldn't answer the phone to me, etc. Horrible.

  • Driving it

    What's it like to drive?

Like all BMW M cars, it's fantastic to drive. Can be a bit too snatchy past the limit without the traction control on (for those like me who aren't drift kings). Will match an Audi RS4 in the dry to 100mph, and give most non-turbo 911s a run for their money. Sounds fantastic too. It's no V8, but it sounds better than most 6-cylinder cars on song.

    What's it like to park?

Long bonnet and limited rear view. Rear parking sensors are a must. The front skirt will hit pavements easily; it's difficult to judge the bonnet length so park backwards...

Have you had any problems with the car?

Other than a few minor niggles at the beginning (horn), there has been nothing of note that has gone wrong, other than normal wear of the pads and discs requiring replacement.

What's most practical about your car?

It's blue so can be spotted in a car park. Other than that, space is limited. Fuel could be better, boot fits a golf bag minus trolley and storage is limited inside. Cup holders have never been an issue in my lifetime. Until now. The lack of them means McDonald's drinks have to be balanced precariously on the seat.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Got to be the sport button. It only increases the response on the throttle, but it makes you feel like the car goes quicker even though it really doesn't.
