Definately buy second hand, and reap the benefits , comparible spec range rover twice the price!
Costs
Fuel economy 17 mpg in or out of town ,towing or not. It just does what it does!!

Driving
Excellent driveing machine. Tows anything anywhere, car transporters and caravan. Very stable. Light Use off road occasional ,guaranteed never to stick even with road tyres.
Performance
People just think another 4 x 4 plug! Watch out, often suprises hi performance machinery.

Living with it
Reliability
Lower Ball joints replaced at m.o.t £25 a side, not the easiest job I done. Repaired oil cooler for steering. Imobiliser black box on fuel tank caused me some grief, Still love it. After all, even the best motors breakdown.

Very comfortable , excellent long distance effortless drive even when towing.

Standard alarm / immobiliser. Did give me problems once, black box on top of fuel tank had faulty connection
Service
Local ford garages have shyed away from the explorer, also most bits take a few days to get, although aftermarket suppliers can usually supply off the shelf.Haynes manuals are available, which help people like myself.
