Jaguar 1981 XJ Saloon
  • Economy

    Value

    3 out of 5 3.0

Dropped a lot in value over last two years. Buy for future use, not investment/resale value.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Servicing is reasonable considering complexity. Tyres are costly and can blow a budget!

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very responsive and LOVES open country roads, loads of fun on twisty undulating tarmac.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very good for small engine auto, impressive build up of speed from kickdown, lovely engine sound.

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Been very good over year of ownership at 112,000 miles, done 4000 quite reliable miles this year, only one repair (steering hose).

I don't care - but ok. Doesn't look too hot in Silver with plastic wheel trims!

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very comfy seats, albeit in Tweed. Good ventilation but no AC, nice ride generally, but a bit harsh over manholes and broken tar etc.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    5 out of 5 5.0

Nobody has tried to steal it yet. Central locking can play up so needs lubricating etc.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Jag dealers too expensive, but very good service from independant specialists and parts suppliers.

    Problems

    Engine

None. Only slight smoke from valves on startup after long sleep.

    Other

Had to replace power steering hydraulic hose, £200 including labour. Minor glitches with central locking.
