Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate (86-)
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

You get a lot of car for your money here. I bought this one when it was 7 years old for £6k and it's been worth every penny.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Two things have gone wrong - a driveshaft broke (£700) and the self leveling compressor broke (£350). Dealer costs are a bit steep though, so I get it done at a local garage.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

It's a great cruiser and uterlly brilliant on the motorways. Just eats up the miles. It's a bit vague on the old B roads though.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

I've got the sportline model, but that doesn't mean much. Slightly tighter suspension and slightly more sporty seats.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    3 out of 5 3.0

A couple of (expensive) things have gone wrong, but it does have 186,000 miles on the clock and it's still going strong.

    Image

    2 out of 5 2.0

Ok, not exactly the sportiest image in the world, but it's still got quite a cache as a Merc.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

Great big comfortable sofa of a car.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

It's got central locking and an alarm/imobaliser. I can't see any self respecting joyrider wanting a merc estate though!

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

When I've taken it to Mercedes, the dealer couldn't have been better. John R. Weir in Grangemouth.

A great car, fantastic for a growing family.
