Mercedes-Benz E-Class Saloon (85-)

    Value

This car cost £55000 new and because of its rarity it has stopped depreciating to any degree.

    Costs

    2 out of 5 2.0

Can be pricey, at 100,000 miles wiring harness and head gaskets need changing, ECU went in 2003. Very costly but it has been worth it. Servicing same as other W124's in most respects, therefore not as much as you may think. Very well made.

    Driving

Sits down well on the road on standard sportline suspension. Uses brakes from E500 and S600 so stops well. Handles well for a big car and is happy in town or on fast A roads. Not a rally car and modern performance diesels have same power. Good fun.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

It is a fast car but is now 11 yrs old. With 272bhp it is still quick .0-60 in about 7 seconds and 155mph top.

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very good, no issues but the car is fairly pampered.

    Image

    2 out of 5 2.0

The car has an original factory AMG body kit with driving lamps fitted in front spoiler. Still looks good but has been imitated many times and may not be to some modern tastes

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Very comfortable. The rear is a little short on leg room but still adequate. Electric heated seats etc.

  • Security and Service

    Service

I use an good independent and would not use a main dealer for a car this age. There is no advantage and independents are arguably more knowledgeable of older models.
