Peugeot 205 Hatchback 1983

Buy one now, prices are starting to rise for good examples.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Expensive to fix as they're getting old, but pay for good parts and they'll last another 15 years. Would definitely recommend a specialist and owners' club route. Modern garages won't bother trying to save you money.

    Driving

Handles, stops and goes like a dream. Don't back off in corners and you'll outperform almost everything. Would definitely recommend quick shift gear linkages to replace sloppy old ones.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

A tiny light car with a big engine. 60 arrives faster than your licence would like, but most impressive is the mid-range pull. Overtaking is a breeze. Easily tuneable as well.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

I'll be honest. I abuse this car, and it keeps coming back for more. Only thing gone wrong so far is perished seals on the master cylinder. But best get some AA cover just in case.

A good one looks the mutt's nuts. A bad one looks well used. Steer clear of ""modified"" ones. You'll get laughed at.

    Comfort

    2 out of 5 2.0

Not great to be honest. Nice seats, but interior falls apart. Watch out for seat bolsters collapsing, interior blower fans failing. Heavy clutch as standard, not good in traffic. Stiff suspension is great in corners, but when cruising it's very bumpy.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Get a garage. Never leave it outside. Park next to a wall and climb out through the boot hatch. Mine opens with a key from a 106! If you want to keep it, get an approved alarm and immobiliser fitted. Insurance savings often make up the cash spent.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

Peugeot have officially stopped funding owners' clubs, and couldn't care less when I went to dealer asking about parts. Best bet is owners' clubs and specialists, there are loads around as the GTI is still a popular trackday weapon.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Engine mounts are the only weak point and can cause the kangaroo effect in traffic. 1905cc lump is bombproof otherwise.

    Other

Interior is the main worry, squeaks and rattles all over. Get a tub of Vaseline and spend a weekend sorting it.
