Renault 19 Saloon 1989-
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Very good. Bought for £360 with F.R.S.H.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

1.4 litre engine gives 45 mpg on a combined cycle, insurance is group 4 and reasonable servicing costs.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

A very smooth car to drive, but loses a point because of slightly sloppy gearbox.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Good. I have got the car up to 110mph, although it was struggling a bit. Get the revs up then change up the gearbox to get the best out of the engine, especially when going up a hill.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Has virtually never let me down, except when the throttle cable snapped.

    Image

    2 out of 5 2.0

Good in it's day, but not anymore. Still there are a lot worse looking cars on the road.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

If you like your car seats soft and squidgy like I do, then it's comfortable.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

It has an immobiliser and has never been stolen, so not bad considering its age.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

I don't use local main dealer as they are useless and overpriced. I use an independent Renault specialist, who are exellent. There are also a selection of secondhand Renualt parts which makes some jobs far cheaper.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Excellent. Has done 119,500 miles, doesn't burn any oil and carries on going.

    Other

Had cambelt replaced when I first got the car to be on the safe side.Cambelt repacement is every 48,000 miles and had a full service carried out.I supplied my own oil (mobil 1 15/50 fully synthetic) and added slick 50 to the engine which help prevent wear
