They are practically given away now.

Many pattern and salvage parts available. Little need to visit the main dealer, which is a good thing whatever car you drive!

    Driving

    Easy, no fuss, no frills.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

It manages to tow many caravan! I can get 47mpg doing motorway driving and thats with 154,000 miles on the original engine. Not an overtaking man's car!

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

With 154,000 miles on the clock, I still can do 200 miles a day on the motorway with confidence. In 2 years it's needed little more than service items. Gearbox and head off at 115,000 miles, but that's common weakness on the K series.

This car is better than blacked out windows if you like to drive around unnoticed. It won't attract any position or more importantly negative attention.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

I was a company car driver for 14 years and had all the usual Fords and Vauxhalls. Although this car is old, the driving position is the best I've come across because the seat, steering and pedals actually line up correctly. Durable interior.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    5 out of 5 5.0

The fact that it is a J Reg Rover 214 is all the security you need. I felt chuffed when someone stole the Rover badge once!

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

I enjoy cheap motoring now by avoiding the main agents at all costs. After years as a company car driver, I took the allowance and got this Rover as a stop gap, but it's too reliable to think about changing. You must keep the engine well serviced.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

A bit noisy at 70mph. Good around town. Seems like it will go forever if you look after it properly. Choose an earlier pre-cat single point injection, they are easier to fix. Engine mounts die with age, but note expensive.

    Other

If you start it cold, then only run it for a short while to say move it a few yards. Next time to come to use it hours later it will mis-fire badly. Let it warm up normally and there won't be a problem. I've never solved this, work around it.
