Rover 400 Saloon 1996-
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Good spec interior, although quality not great (lots of plastic, a few bits fall off occasionally). Decent engine. Can be picked up very cheaply now, although looks dated.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Fuel economy poor for short journeys, but seems to be far more economical on long motorway journeys. Servicing and cost of parts seems about average. Insurance costs high - group 11!

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Feels steady and composed. Good driving position. Reasonably comfortable for long journeys. Nothing spectacular, but a decent compromise between comfort and performance. Poor rear visibility when parking.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Good when pushed hard. Power starts to surge at 2500rpm and then gets a second wind at 5000. Struggles below 2500rpm though - if revs drop below this line you will need to drop a gear. Competent motorway cruiser.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    2 out of 5 2.0

Head gasket and water pump gone at 73000 miles, gear box winding and on the way out. Fans only work on top two settings. Front brakes constantly rub when hot which seems to be an incurable problem. Head gasket problems seem to be common.

    Image

    3 out of 5 3.0

Has a bit of an 'old man' image. 4 door version looks classy.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Ok for long journeys. Suspension quite soft without compromising handling too much. Plenty of comfort for front passenger, but adults will struggle for space in the rear. Rear headroom very poor. Boot is vast as long as you don't have anything too bulky.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

Alarm and immobiliser standard - no attempted break-ins.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

I have not used Rover dealers for servicing.
