Saab 900 Saloon 1980-
  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

£700 nearly 2yrs ago. FDSH & faultless. Total reliability more than compensates its thirst.

    Costs

    5 out of 5 5.0

No unexpected costs. Thirsty - but I know when we go out regardless of distance, we'll get there. 500m round trips taken with total confidence. Simple DIY mechanics & cheapo suppliers - Euro Car Parts & German & Swedish both excellent.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Surprises other drivers - surprises me! Is nippier than some less-noticeable cars, mondeos etc. Previous owner had adjustable suspension on back ( towing ) which aids handling. V comfy and corners well.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

As above - drivers expect to see some old chap in a flat cap doing 22mph! Is v nippy for such a heavy old car.

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Apart from usual consumables and inevitable exhaust-rear swing arm bushes (£60 fitted) & water pump as a precautionary (£23-self fit). E/Mirror damaged by van driver - £10 local scrappy.

    Image

    3 out of 5 3.0

Not for everyone. But safety & reliability & cheap costs make sense. Old but put together like nothing else. Makes better sense than a tired Mondeo. Distinctive & endearing.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

Extremely comfortable. No aches after long trips. Seats are great & heated for cold mornings. Side Impact bars and pig iron make you feel v.safe. Dash is ugly but well thought out.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    5 out of 5 5.0

Any self-respecting thief wouldn't be seen dead in one! They'll be busy with your neighbours BMW.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

Independent parts suppliers cheap & useful. Bothered dealer once & never again! Dealers have a poor rep. Local scrappy v.pleasent & seriously cheap!

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Bullet proof. Old Triumph design - if we built it like this we'd still have a motor industry. 93t miles-barely run in. Have seen them with 250t on clock.

    Other

Heavy drinking apart, this has been the perfect budget family car. A newer more frugal car would've been in garage many times over by now.
