What does this car say about you?

That I buy a car because it is the right one for me - not because of its badge.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

Everyone seems pretty impressed, but they wouldn't tell me if they weren't I suppose.

Would you buy this car again and why?

Yes - it is a unique combination of small practical family hatchback and part-time off-roader. Exactly what I needed.

What are you likely to buy next?

Now that the SX4 has proved itself capable enough for my off-road needs I have replaced my Honda CR-V with BMW 5 series for motorway comfort.

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Franchise

Did you buy this car new?

    Yes

    What price did you pay?

    £12,200

When did you buy the car?

    March 2007

Did you get a good deal and why?

Dealer knocked about £800 off list price, coming within about £200 of the best internet price. Didn't need to haggle - just mentioned the online quotes. Thought that the £200 was worth it for the convenience and security of buying from a local main dealer.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Wanted a smallish, reasonably economical vehicle that looked and drove like a car but with good ground clearance and some off-road ability. The SX4 was the only thing that ticked all the boxes.

    What was the dealer like?

Courteous and pleasant but no hard sell. Seemed straight-talking and honest.

  • Driving it

    What's it like to drive?

The engine is probably a little underpowered for the car. It's quite nippy about town but at 60-70mph in top gear it can feel quite sluggish. At 80mph however the higher rpm makes it feel more powerful again. The handling is very good considering the ground clearance but the ride is very firm as a result.

    What's it like to park?

Very easy to park with light steering and good rear visibility, but the pillars around the front quarterlights do create a blindspot which can be a problem on some bends.

Have you had any problems with the car?

Windscreen had to be removed and re-bonded as it started rattling after 3-4 weeks! Dealer carried out work immediately. We were advised to keep an eye on it as ours was the second SX4 that they had seen with this problem. In addition, it has also been back for some dashboard rattles and a leaky door seal.

What's most practical about your car?

High ground clearance is a must for me. The SX4 has almost as much as my Honda CR-V but you would never know from the way it drives. The switchable 4WD system is very simple to use and works well.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

The CD player reads MP3 CDs giving hours of music without changing discs. Climate control works a treat. MPG readout is fascinating but fuel economy is a bit disappointing - typically only 35mpg for mixed town/country driving.
