  • Winners of best small, medium and large van
  • Plus pickup of the year and overall van of the year
  • Find out which vans and pickups we rate the best

The annual Parkers New Car Awards results are out, and for 2020 we’re pleased to announce that we’ve increased the number of van awards. Rather than a single van of the year champion, this year we’ve picked winners from the small, medium and large van categories, as well as pickups.

From the victors here we’ve then selected a final Van of the Year 2020 – but which van is it? Read on to find out.

Parkers Small Van of the Year 2020

The winner of the 2020 Parkers Small Van Award is actually triplets – namely the impressive Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner and Vauxhall Combo Cargo.

Since their introduction at the turn of the year we’ve been impressed with the easy driving experience, spacious cab area and outstanding payload capacities. They’re also available with innovative technology solutions – including permanent rear-view camera systems – hosts of modern safety equipment and can be tailored to suit a wide range of applications.

It’s a convincing victory for the PSA Group vans, but we should mention there are a pair of worthy runners up in this category as well: the Ford Transit Connect and the Volkswagen Caddy.

The Ford scores highly for its outstanding driving experience, built-in connectivity and good running costs, while the VW appeals to those looking for a premium image with proper practicality and punchy engines.

Parkers Medium Van of the Year 2020

The Ford Transit Custom is a familiar sight on UK roads – it’s Britain’s bestselling light commercial vehicle – but more importantly, it’s a brilliant mid-size van and deserving winner of the 2020 Parkers Medium Van Award.

Parkers Medium Van of the Year Award 2020 winner: Ford Transit Custom

From its high payload ratings through to its powerful engines and its stylish exterior through to its car-like cab environment, this is a van that can get the job done while giving the driver a real sense of ownership pride. It’s also one of the most innovative vans on sale in any sector, with mild-hybrid tech available as an option and a unique petrol-electric Plug-In Hybrid version at the top of the range.

Ford really doesn’t take any prisoners here. But if you’re not turned on by the Transit Custom, consider one of our runners-up instead: the Volkswagen Transporter and the closely related quartet of the Citroen Dispatch, Peugeot Expert, Toyota Proace and Vauxhall Vivaro.

The VW comes in a wide range of variants – whether you’re after a basic van or a lifestyle family wagon, there’s a Transporter to suit – while the others collectively appeal for high payload ratings and frugal fuel economy.

Parkers Large Van of the Year 2020

The Volkswagen Crafter was the reigning Parkers Van of the Year, having won the 2018 and 2019 awards, so it’s no perhaps surprised to see it take the inaugural Parkers Large Van Award in 2020 – alongside its closely related cousin, the MAN TGE.

These vans, both built in VW’s dedicated factory, are exceptional for the importance they place on the driver. Incredibly easy to drive, despite their size, with practical, high-quality cabs and standard-fit autonomous emergency braking, these are the large vans we’d want to drive every day. Reliability is so far proving excellent, and running costs are highly competitive, too.

All of this places them above the competition for us, but the two closest alternatives are the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and the facelifted Ford Transit, which are both also worth a look.

The Sprinter is comfortable and extremely high-tech in its latest guise, and continues to prove hugely popular with big fleets. The latest Transit has increased payload, connectivity to suit all kinds of operators and should prove cost-effective to run.

Parkers Pickup of the Year 2020

The 2020 Parkers Pickup Award goes to the Ford Ranger, which is now the clear leader for all-round talent in the pickup truck segment, following a series of updates for 2019.

Chief among these are the new 2.0-litre EcoBlue engines, which offer up to 213hp (and 500Nm), and can be combined with a 10-speed automatic. With active noise cancelling, they make for an astonishingly quiet pickup, while chassis changes and the introduction of a high-performance Raptor variant all improve the Ranger’s driving credentials. Add high payloads, a wide selection of trim levels and options, and you’ve got a pickup that can do everything – even the school run.

Runners-up here are the stylish Mitsubishi L200 Series 6 and the all-V6 Volkswagen Amarok.

The L200 remains a light and nimble choice that’s great value, while the Amarok’s powerful engines, car-like cab and large load area make this the key premium choice.

Parkers Van of the Year 2020

The overall 2020 Parkers Van of the Year Award goes to…. the Volkswagen Crafter and the MAN TGE.

Of our three van award winners, these big vans still stand out above the others, and we rate them as the best vans you can buy right now.
