  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Can pick up a good buy for no money.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Can drink petrol, a £27 tank did me 250-260 miles if I was lucky; parts can be costly, nothing major though. At group 9 insurance it can be a bit of a killer. Especially when you're at 18-22.

  • On the road

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

Quite fast, gears are quite wide apart and it may give you arm strain over time. Generally fun.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

It will go if you want it to. Can be a little noisy at speed.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

No major problems, battery, springs and shocks, the car is 12 years old so what can you expect. Nice car you don't mind spending a little on it. Two niggles it chuggs in the cold and rattles from underneath.

Boy-racer. It maybe an older car but the name says it all. GOLF impresses.

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Seats are a little hard and can give you a sore back on very long trips 3hrs +, over all quite comfortable, good seat springs in driver's seat and seat height adjustment helps.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    2 out of 5 2.0

OK locks, but no alarms fitted, so maybe an idea if you want to keep your Golf to fit one.

    Service

    4 out of 5 4.0

Never used a VW dealer for any service so can't judge.
