VW Polo Hatchback 1981-
  • Economy

    Value

    2 out of 5 2.0

There's better cars for the money. VW overpricing.

    Costs

    2 out of 5 2.0

Parts, even factor ones, are dearer than other manufacturers and not in scrapyards yet.

  • On the road

    Driving

    1 out of 5 1.0

Handles like a dog, though does benefit slightly from new front shocks. Top quality tyres are a must to get safe levels of grip, but ride will always be uncomfy.

    Performance

    1 out of 5 1.0

Relatively heavy/solid car, but weedy engine overtaking for the suicidal only. Needs a 5th gear for regular motorway use.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    2 out of 5 2.0

Generally good, but when it does go wrong (and it will) it's major.

    Image

    1 out of 5 1.0

It could be the most boring car ever. Great if you don't want attention.

    Comfort

    2 out of 5 2.0

Ride is very poor and driving position is for baboons only.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

This car is so easy to brake in to. Fit armoured door locks for £60ish and immobiliser.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

On the odd occasion I've used a VW dealer, they've always got it wrong.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Engine

Too small for job. Cylinder head cracked twice. Check for cream in oil and pressure in water pipes.

    Other

High miles needs service. Look for uneven front tyre wear.
