  • Summary

    4 out of 5 4.0

What does this car say about you?

I'm a bit boring and sensible. Mine is a blackcurrant colour so apparently I'm frustrated. But mostly annoymous and middle class.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

More of the above. The ones with 3.6 ltr boxer engines are jealous of the ave 45-66mpg with the cost of diesel. Otherwise smart and tidy car.

Would you buy this car again and why?

No, because I always feel like I want something a little more exciting when driving this car. But I'd reccomend one. Though I'd warn them that its not as reliable as you might think. Also dealer servicing and parts expensive.

What are you likely to buy next?

    Something different.

    Didn't buy from a dealer

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £6,600

When did you buy the car?

    July 2006

Did you get a good deal and why?

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Cheap to run, low insurance etc.

    What was the dealer like?

  • Driving it

    What's it like to drive?

Requires some effort to get smooth take offs and gap between first and second gear are a bit wide for town driving (won't go into 1st so have to slip clutch in 2nd). Gearbox is notchy but works better than other VWs I've driven of similar age. Started to noisly humm in neutral before the mechanism broke. TDI performance is impressive and relentless up to 110mph (i imagine), Disc brakes all round so stops well. Otherwise handling is fairly neutral and grippy and in the wet manages lift of oversteer with the older tyres at the back.

    What's it like to park?

    Easier than shaving.

  • Living with it

Have you had any problems with the car?

Yes. Broken gear linkage, kindly repaired by the AA. Loose bolt on the left selector linkage under gearstick. Local VW dealer said not a known fault. Apparently not the case. Knocking from trim in left rear corner and mystery vibrations from dash. But easily drowned out.

What's most practical about your car?

5 doors and four proper seats.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Had a blue tooth fitted, (with button under asytray lid) and iPod connections fitted, but doesn't work with the CD changer, obviously not a prob. Trip computer, so I can obsessivly check my stats on the way to work or on long drives.
