Pick a decent one up for less than a grand. Insurance appalling.
Costs
Very economical. 40mpg+ from 1.8 and 1.8i. Average servicing costs from VW. New VW spares expensive.

Driver's car. No power steering, heavy cable clutch and bumpy ride. Not for the faint hearted.
Performance
Excellent accelaration from short gear ratios - top-end is eye-opening.
