  • Economy

    Value

    2 out of 5 2.0

Far from low-priced but still good value for money. In my views the interior trim is a complete disappointment - durability especially in the rear compartment is downright poor my example has failed to withstand carrying the usual family paraphernalia.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

I would worry about long term maintenance costs - a lot of technology to go wrong. Fuel consumption can really drop - if driven hard, expect below 40mpg. Eats tyres!

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Excellent handling, fun to drive even if the upright driving position makes you think otherwise.

    Performance

    5 out of 5 5.0

Very good. Close ratio 6-speed box and wide torque range from engine makes it fun. The gate biassing on the 6-speed box makes changing up/down very easy. An epic midnight journey through the Scottish Highlands (4-up) drew remarks about ""special powers"".

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    2 out of 5 2.0

A host of small problems engine heater belched grey smoke, faulty seat belt stalk, computer errors, trim damage under normal wear and tear

""Steady and boring"" hides a surprisingly impressive performance and handling. Don't believe in VW robustness when it comes to interior build quality however.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

All my passengers think it's great. The driver probably comes off worse with hard ride and feedback from the relatively low-profile tyres and high-torque engine. VW make a big play about the 39 compartment, most of which aren't quite big enough!

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

    Seems OK.

    Service

    4 out of 5 4.0

I am lucky to have a small enthusiastic and competent local dealer who have come to know me and remark on the thickness of the warranty service file (sorry VW but that's the truth!)

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

    None except heater.

    Other

Problems with computer and other small items. Also, a lot of the internal adjustments (heater flow control, rear seat adjustment/moving, luggage cover, bonnet release) are very hard to use if you have wrist problems (e.g. arthritis).

    Ownership

Did you buy the car new?

    New

Would you buy the same model again?

    Yes

Did you buy from the same manufacturer again?

    Yes
