  • Economy

    Value

    5 out of 5 5.0

Excellent value - I bought nearly new and saved £thousands, intending to keep the car for a long time.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Fuel consumption seems slightly worse than the 164 it replaced, otherwise too early to tell.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Precise handling and absorbant ride strike an ideal 'real world' balance. This car is so much better than the 156 and 147 that I've had while it's been with the dealer for warranty work!

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

The weight counts against it compared with the earlier 164, but it's more flexible in town and pulls strongly for a big 2-litre.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    3 out of 5 3.0

It's not broken down, but far too many build quality problems on nearly-new purchase (covered by warranty) suggest Alfa has a quality mountain to climb.

Compared with the 156, the styling is an acquired taste (which suits me fine). Very colour sensitive, buy silver or black.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very quiet cabin in a different league than smaller Alfas. Slightly too much engine noise a result of low gearing but sounds great. Lumbar adjustment not on basic spec but nothing else missing.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

Immobiliser would be a useful addition to the alarm, otherwise seems very secure.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

    Dealer service can be indifferent.
