In their own words

I put worth considering but choose the version carefully because of the problems I had with it at the beginning. Big engined diesels are not for city driving, you'll wreck it, and your bank balance, very fast - and moreover, cost the next guy who buys it money and stress. However, if you can get a top spec M Sport, they are incredible. the 325d is a great engine (mine pre LCI, 197bhp 3.0l from E46 series) and highly tunable. remapped sits at 265bhp, and 400lb ft of torque. more than sufficient. Flappy paddles are fun - probably moreso in a revvy petrol but actually the gearing in the diesel is pretty long (shifts into 6th at 130ish on the track) The nav system is efficient, stereo system is good, very clear but not quite powerful enough for my liking. Leather heated seats are great, very comfortable but electric movement is very slow and a little unnecessary! great looks, great power, would probably look at 335d or 435d if I went to replace it.

How reliable do you find the car?

Previous owner ran car around London for one year, covering 2000 miles. Since owning I have replaced EGR actuator as was stuck causing limp home. This caused too much soot to run through exhaust and caused partial DPF blockage. DPF was chemically cleaned, EGR actuator replaced, car fully serviced and worn headlamp wiring replaced. Horror stories everywhere about DPFs on these - they are big, powerful 3.0l lumps, and need to do good runs at temperature to keep them running well. Don't buy one if you cover less than 50 miles a day - your repair bills will quickly outweigh MPG savings. Since repaired (and with daily commute of 70 mile round trip at national speed limit) car runs like it's out the factory. Removal of rocker cover at 100,000 miles revealed a like new setup, no mechanical deterioration. USE IT PROPERLY and you'll be laughing.

Does the car do everything you expected it to do?

Flappy paddle gearbox, sat nav, great gearbox, very powerful, very smooth (road surface dependant - M Sport suspension really is hard) looks great, turns heads (surprisingly, it's a dark grey 10 plated BMW) always complimented on it. Well out of warranty so service and repairs aren't premium now at local garage (good garage scheme)
