Other BMW 3-Series (2005 - 2013) models:

  • Summary

    5 out of 5 5.0

What does this car say about you?

I can't say I care; I bought it for the quality. It probably suggests I appreciate the difference between quality engineering, and a Skoda Superb with posh seats; I think they call that the "Audi A4".

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

Everybody loves it, especially those that drive it or ride in it for a long journey. Neighbours probably think I'm a bit of a Flash Harry, but that's their problem.

Would you buy this car again and why?

Absolutely. Faultless reliability, wonderful driving experience, comfortable and surprisingly frugal for the class; I've had 700 miles out of a tank. Overall cost of ownership is excellent, bar the insurance.

What are you likely to buy next?

Another BMW diesel. Maybe a 320d coupe, or a 320d M-Sport, although I'd happily have another one exactly the same spec.

  • Buying experience

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Independent

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £11,500

When did you buy the car?

    August 2009

Did you get a good deal and why?

Yes. Price was a competitive, and gave me a great deal on my clunky old Golf.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

Every BMW I've ever driven has been fantastic, so thought it was time to treat myself after a duff Audi and VW. Residuals and economy figures swung it.

    What was the dealer like?

I don't like car dealers as a rule.

  • Driving it

    5 out of 5 5.0

    What's it like to drive?

Excellent. Beautifully balanced and composed through the twisty bits, with great feedback. Supremely comfortable on motorways. Not quick at take off, but I'm not a boy racer, so the mid-range oomph more than makes up for it.

    What's it like to park?

No problems in general, but it is a bit wide, so car parks can be a little tight sometimes.

  • Living with it

    5 out of 5 5.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

Not a thing in 40,000 miles.

What's most practical about your car?

It covers lots of miles with minimum fuss.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

It's an ES, so there are no toys, but the Aux and power sockets in the armrest are handy for my DAB tuner and iPod.
