In their own words

Positives:

Feels more solidly built than its successor, the G30. The 2 litre 520d engine is punchy but expect a slight bit of turbo-lag; sport mode makes a difference with the throttle response though!
Interior wear - for a car that’s 10 years+ old and with 97k on it - is minimal… really impressive in fact. Materials used are superb.
Fuel economy is excellent for such a big, executive saloon. Typically, all models come well-specified; you won’t be wanting for more gadgets!
Servicing costs are reasonable - of course, not via main dealers!

Negatives:

Check the alloys (17”): they have a tendency to corrode quite badly. Refurbs aren’t too dear though.
Timing chain issues are common but I can’t say I’ve ever felt anything other than the engine operating perfectly. Regular servicing and oil changes should keep it healthy. Keep an eye out for damp in the rear passenger footwell: just had a bill of over £300 to get this rectified (leak from under the bonnet, common on 5/6 series models apparently). Rear parking sensor also stopped working which knocked the whole PDC system out. The bill for that was approximately £200 with a diagnosis included.

A minor gripe, but the BMW door insert logo falls off on the majority of models. I found replacements for these on eBay for about £50 and glued them on - job done!

All in all, definitely a car I would recommend. A real pleasure to drive. The SE model, driven in comfort, encourages you to drive relaxingly and frugally. But, in comfort or sport mode, you’ll want for no more speed. An easy car to live with and one that is aging gracefully! There’s no coincidence you see them everywhere.
