Citroen Xsara Hatchback
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Cheap to purchase - but subsequent depreciation is bad. Car lost £ 6,000 in 18 months - so a very good used buy after two years!

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Cheap to run due to low insurance cost, 55 mpg and 12,500-mile service interval.

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Fun to drive but skinny tyres lack grip (car skidded twice for me - don"t buy a car without ABS). HDi engine is far superior to old XUD and improves a lot with mileage.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Slow sprinter unless thrashed - but very flexible on motorway.

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

Almost 100% over 32,000 miles - only a failed airbag sensor spoiled the record. Car was struck by lightning and involved in very bad floods last year - and still ran without fault!

    Image

    2 out of 5 2.0

Styling very old fashioned / conservative - not what you expect from Citroen! On the plus side this results in no attention from thieves!

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Very good over short journeys - not so good for tall drivers over longer trips.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    4 out of 5 4.0

Engine immobiliser as standard - but most thieves are not interested in this car.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Dealer had to be told by me what was wrong with the car when airbag sensor failed! At least they did then rectify the fault without question.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Engine

100% reliable - no problems. The car was struck by lightning last year - still started and ran!

    Other

Airbag sensor failed. Front discs have warped on a friend's Xsara.
