  • Summary

    4 out of 5 4.0

What does this car say about you?

That I am a bit of a boy racer.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

Surprisingly positive reactions all round. Even hardened cynics have been won over and a lot of people ask me if the car is new!

Would you buy this car again and why?

Yes. I am a young driver and it is a compelling balance of low insurance, decent fuel economy, reliability and cheap purchase price.

What are you likely to buy next?

Something larger - potentially a Focus ST or keep this for track duties and then have a large estate for load lugging.

  • Buying experience

    5 out of 5 5.0

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Didn't buy from a dealer

Did you buy this car new?

    No

    What price did you pay?

    £2,900

When did you buy the car?

    March 2014

Did you get a good deal and why?

Yes. The car has some superficial damage - dented drivers side door and classic fogging of the badges. Otherwise a strong runner.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

    What was the dealer like?

  • Driving it

    5 out of 5 5.0

    What's it like to drive?

Engaging and agile. Taking it out on a country road or onto the track is a joy. Very easy to control the car at the limits, steering is nicely weighted and I am able to keep up with faster cars because of the confidence. The problem is on the motorway. This car needs a 6th gear because at motorway cruising speeds the engine noise is loud and unpleasant, but then that is the trade off. Suspension is firm but has enough travel to tackle city streets.

    What's it like to park?

Very easy. Small car, lots of glass space.

  • Living with it

Have you had any problems with the car?

Lost a wheel nut cover from hittting a particularly stubborn cats eye which cost £15 to replace and it is a common part to lose. However I wouldn't be surprised if it had been fitted badly. The glue holding the direvers side upper black door trim had failed and the piece fell off on the motorway so that is worth checking on the car as the replacement is £20 and a fresh application of glue would have solved the issue much more cheaply. Suspect the ECU hasn't had its requisite upgrade due to lumpy idle and difficulty starting sometimes. Folding mechanism on right-hand side rear seat failed in the locked position. Again a known fault on this vehicle. Currently being replaced during a service. Otherwise engine has been totally trouble free for a couple thousand miles.

What's most practical about your car?

It is practical for a supermini hot hatch. Large doors and high roofline make getting my 70 year old father in the car very easy. The boot is plenty big enough and with the seats down I have managed to fit 2 mountain bikes, albeit with the wheels taken off.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

My car as the optional racing stripes which are great, love seeing the reflection in the car in front when sitting in traffic! Also love the column mounted music controls, very handy to have them there especially with the CD changer.
