  • Summary

    5 out of 5 5.0

What does this car say about you?

It said boy racer, and that you had better have something seriously quick if you wanted to play with it, on an "airfield" of course.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

They thought it looked good in gun-metal grey, and friends knew how capable it was, point to point.

Would you buy this car again and why?

I could buy this type of car again, it was a special car "of its time" and i miss the good points of the pug.

What are you likely to buy next?

    Astra, Focus?

    No

    £5,895

When did you buy the car?

    January 1992

Did you get a good deal and why?

Not particularly. It was private purchase and i just paid the going rate.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

I wanted a top hot hatch of the time. I picked between the Renault 5 GT turbo and the Pug.

    What was the dealer like?

    No dealer.

  • Driving it

    5 out of 5 5.0

    What's it like to drive?

In stop start traffic it was unpleasant. The clutch was very heavy and it would often be trying to stall. However, on a country lane it was spectacular. Cornered on rails, stuck to the road like glue, destroyed slower moving cars. Cross country it was epic.

    What's it like to park?

Not great. Visibility was good, but steering and clutch were heavy.

  • Living with it

    3 out of 5 3.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

For its time it was a powerful, highly stressed/tuned engine. It used to stall sometimes at junctions, when on tickover. I had it tuned at a specialist garage and it was better after that. An engine mount broke and the track rods (i think) were replaced. But that was really a by-product of the way it was driven.

What's most practical about your car?

The way it could propel you past traffic given the smallest of straights.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

The sunroof was huge and had a clever inflating seal. I guess i liked the alloys most, and the colour; gunmetal grey.
