Other Subaru Legacy (2003 - 2010) models:

  • Summary

    5 out of 5 5.0

What does this car say about you?

That I appreciate cars for their abilities and their engines, rather than their badge.

What do your friends / family / neighbours think of the car?

They wonder what it is, especially after they've gone for a 'flying lap' in it...

Would you buy this car again and why?

Absolutely! If only they still made it for the UK market, which they don't. If Subaru could develop a flat 6 boxer diesel engine that pushes out >200bhp then a) A4/A6 quattro sales would suffer and b) I don't think I'd ever need another car!

What are you likely to buy next?

Unfortunately, it may have to be a sensible diesel, possibly an Audi as I've got used to 4wd, due to a long commute. I actually achieve much better MPG than the manufacturers 22mpg - I have had 30+ mpg in the past and even driving it very energetically, I can comfortably achieve 23+ mpg.

Type of dealer you bought from?

    Franchised

Did you buy this car new?

    Yes

    What price did you pay?

    £22,000

When did you buy the car?

    November 2005

Did you get a good deal and why?

I actually leased the car initially, before buying it at the end of the lease term. The lease deal was exceptional - worked out to a c30% discount on the MRP due to having servicing and maintenance included for the first 3 years.

Is there any special reason why you bought this car?

I wanted a fast, sporty and enjoyable car, but which also was practical. I was too old for an Impreza!

    What was the dealer like?

Bell & Colvill have been very good. Very polite and attentive, although typical with many main dealers, their servicing costs are rather high and no longer justifiable for a car that is 9 years old hence I now use an independent for most things.

  • Driving it

    5 out of 5 5.0

    What's it like to drive?

Without a doubt the best car I have ever driven! And I include in that cars such as the Jaguar XF and indeed a Ferrari from a track day! The only thing that comes close to its balance and poise, especially round corners, is a 911 Carrerra 4.

    What's it like to park?

Easy. I specified rear parking sensors which work fine.

  • Living with it

    5 out of 5 5.0

Have you had any problems with the car?

It does go through tyres, and I replaced the clutch at 75k and the exhaust rusts through on the y-section which is a common problem as Subaru used mild steel rather than stainless.

What's most practical about your car?

It can easily seat 4-5 adults, and copes well with my young family with a large boot, even though it is a saloon.

    Favourite gadget, option or accessory?

Sat nav, definitely, and the in-dash 6cd system. Its quite novel to see a relatively modern car with a cassette player too, although I have no idea what to do with it!
