Value
Good ones are hard to find - there's a fair bit of crap about, but if you get a good 'un, you have a lot of car.
Costs
Fair. VW parts are often better than pattern parts, but you need to be able to fit them yourself. Main dealer costs are crazy. These are, relatively speaking, low tech and bomb proof.

A true drivers car. Future classic muscle. Revs, revs, revs, fun, fun, fun.
Performance
Rev them hard, mmmmm drive them hard.

Mines 167k miles and no probs. Odd wheel bearings. Odd suspension bush. Nothing untoward.

Firm ride, bit noisy, but thats how my girlfriend likes it too.

Needs a doberman on the back seat, a rotwieller in the front and a snake in the boo... or fit a better alarm yourself.
Service
Parts are reasonably fast. Two days for anything. Dealers service prices are crazy.
