In their own words

We have two cars in the family - a large engine tourer and a runabout - and my wife and I do not have a 'his & hers'. We use the cars as required for short or long journeys. I decided to change the runabout in the spring of 2020 and go electric. We tried only two cars - both about a year old - the Nissan Leaf and the eGolf. We much preferred the eGolf, mainly because it perfectly resembles a petrol or diesel Golf whereas many electric cars appear oddly unattractive to us. It has been very good and very cheap to run. It has quick acceleration and meets the predicted 150 mile range in the warmer months. This has dropped to around 100 miles in the middle of winter but is still adequate as a runabout, i.e. trips of under 50 miles each way; we normally don't stray more than 35 miles each way in it so home charging is all we've needed. We've only had one problem - a software fault which drained the 12v battery preventing starting. This was quickly diagnosed and fixed at home under warranty by a software update. I know that electric ranges are gradually extending but, for our runabout use, the 150 mile range is perfectly adequate with the periodic home charge. VW have made an excellent e-version of their most popular car.
