VW Golf Estate 1999-
  • Economy

    Value

    3 out of 5 3.0

Not cheap to buy or service, but holds value well.

    Costs

    1 out of 5 1.0

Wouldn't be so bad if it didn't constantly go wrong. The mpg declines all the time - at 38 now - but no-one can find anything wrong with it.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Very numb controls, but quite quick.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

People think I'm a fuddy duddy on the road as it's an estate, but it surprises most when you put your foot down.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    1 out of 5 1.0

Since my head gasket blew and cost over £1000 to fix, under tray has been replaced, grill fell off, electric window broke, seat broken, climate control unit stopped working, central locking can be iffy. I do look after it honest!

    Image

    2 out of 5 2.0

Blends into the crowd, but I like it that way.

    Comfort

    3 out of 5 3.0

Back seat legroom is dire for a car this size & the driver's seat has broken. Quoted £400 for new base!

  • Security and Service

    Security

    5 out of 5 5.0

Not tested, but it has everything.

    Service

    1 out of 5 1.0

VAG is awful, absolutely terrible. Now go to a specialist - they're absolutely fantastic.
